What's 75 years old, yet brand new?
The Alpine Club! Formerly the Alpine Community Center, the name change became official in January 2025.
Why the switch?
“It is a privately run nonprofit. We are open, memberships are free, but the perception of the community has always been that we are county funded, county run, taxpayer dollars cover the overhead for this large property, and that is just not true,” Executive Director Shane Greer told The Alpine Sun newspaper. “We are more like how the YMCA runs. We all know that the YMCA does so much for the community and people in need, but they also realize that their funds come from private donations and the things they offer for profit.
"We are trying to get the word out so that people understand that when they have their events here, donate here, when they are involved with The Alpine Club, they affect the Alpine community in a generous way.”
The Alpine Club is 501(c)(3) privately funded California non-profit. Most people mistook its former name of a "community center" as meaning it was county funded, although The Alpine Club was always a nonprofit organization.
Originated in May 1950 by 38 community members, the Alpine Youth Center came into being as a non-profit corporation for the purpose of constructing and maintaining a youth center to be operated primarily for the benefit of the youth living in Alpine and the surrounding area. The name eventually changed to the Alpine Community Center.
In November 1950, the Alpine Youth Center was deeded 7.5 acres on its current Alpine Blvd. location. It eventually was constructed into a youth center, which was built from fragmented donated buildings put together by volunteers. Volunteers also assembled the lighted ball field, tennis court and a community park.
Then in 1999, the current building was constructed with a loan from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Alpine Club has also been there to support the community during times of disaster, as was the case during the 2003 Cedar Fire when it became the center point in supporting those affected by the fire and providing hot meals to first responders.
Over the years The Alpine Club has provided many services to the community of Alpine:
• A community park for picnics, concerts and special events for non-profits. It also includes a kid’s playground area.
• Alpine’s only lighted ball field used by youth and adults.
• Alpine’s only lighted tennis court
* The Alpine Urgent Care & Comprehensive Medicine Office is located on our site.
• The Alpine Goodwill is located on our site.
• The Alpine Veterans Wall of Honor is part of The Alpine Club
• Numerous senior programs are offered on site. In 2008, we sold three-quarters of an acre of our property to the new county library. This sale saved us from having to close our doors.
Our doors continue to be open, so come join us!
